On April 30th, 2017 Chase Field, Home of the Arizona Diamondbacks witnessed the longest scoreless game in field history. The Diamondbacks were hosting the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series. Prior to the beginning of the series, the teams were neck and neck for at the top of the National League West. The first two games of the series favored the Rockies but, that last game neither team wanted to lose. It didn’t really seem like either team particularly wanted to win either, for that matter.
Through thirteen innings the Rockies totaled forty-four at-bats and only five hits. The D-BACKS participated in forty-seven at-bats and had eleven hits. The Diamondbacks walked three times while Colorado walked on four occasions. The Rockies used five of their pitchers who struck out a total of thirteen batters. Arizona utilized seven of their pitchers totaling seventeen strikeouts. The Colorado Rockies left a total of seventeen runners on base while the Arizona Diamondbacks left seventeen runners on. Both teams had had the bases loaded at least one time throughout the game.
In the bottom of the tenth inning we saw one of our most popular players, A.J. Pollock, get a bit upset. His teammate hit a single and A.J. made his way to third base. As he ran from first to second he was accused of an interference when the Rockies second baseman’s arm hit him. A.J. saw that he had done nothing wrong and he started to approach the umpire while yelling. This was a side of Pollock that I had never seen before. The D-BACKS third base coach had to hold A.J. back and the bench coach came out and helped to drag him into the dugout.
In the bottom of the thirteenth inning, Daniel Descalso came up to bat with Brandon Drury on first. with an 0-2 pitch count, Daniel slammed a walk-off two-run home run into right field. This ball landed right in the pool where two kids jumped in after it. I hope that they gave him that ball because this was Daniel’s first ever career walk-off home run. The Diamondbacks began April with a walk-off win in their season opener and ended April with a walk-off win as well.
