The Arizona began their season on April 2nd in 2017. They competed against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are a very good team with multiple World Series wins, which is discussed in my first blog. To be able to compete with Giants would be a very big step for the Diamondbacks considering the subpar season that they had in 2016. Two records were set during the Arizona Diamondbacks season opener.
Madison Bumgarner. Oh, what a man. Madison has three World Series rings with the San Francisco Giants and is by far one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball. Don’t be surprised if you one day see MadBum in the baseball hall of fame. Bumgarner was the first pitcher to hit two home runs in an opening day game and I was luckily sitting in the stands scoring that very game. #pitcherswhorake
This game was one heck of a roller coaster ride. The first inning was scoreless for both teams. The Giants then brought a run in in the top of the second. The next two innings were scoreless until MadBum hit his first home run of the night in the fifth inning. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, the Giants brought in yet another run to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the sixth though, the Diamondbacks kicked it into high gear and brought in three runs to tie the game. In the top of the seventh inning, Madison hit his second homer, setting the record. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the D-BACKS again tied the game. Remember how I said this game was a roller coaster? I wasn’t kidding. Into the top of the ninth, the Giants scored and tensions started to rise. As the bottom of the ninth began, I wasn’t so sure the Diamondbacks could do it considering their previous season. But, then Descalso singled and Hazelbaker made it home. The game was tied, again! The next thing I knew Chris Owings was up to bat with two runners on. C.O. hit the first walk-off single in franchise history to win the game! And I had his Jersey on. (Insert sly-faced emoji here).
